Google Docs with Markup AI Chrome Extension

Integration Guide

Check, score, and fix your content without leaving Google Docs. Our Chrome extension adds a side panel to Google Docs so you can check, score, and fix content without leaving the document you’re writing in. It runs the full set of Markup AI agents, so your content is held to the same brand standards across your organization. See the agent documentation for what each one does.

What you need

  • A Google account with access to Google Docs.
  • A Chromium-based browser — Chrome, Edge, Arc, or similar.
  • A Markup AI account. Don’t have one yet? Create your organization at the Markup AI console.
  • Permission to install Chrome extensions. If your browser is managed by your organization, an admin may need to deploy it first.

Install the extension

There are two ways to get the extension: install it yourself from the Chrome Web Store, or have an admin deploy it across your organization.

Option 1: Install it yourself

1

Open the Chrome Web Store listing

Open the Markup AI extension on the Chrome Web Store.

2

Add the extension

Select Add to Chrome, then Add extension in the confirmation dialog.

3

Pin it to the toolbar

Select the puzzle-piece (Extensions) icon in the toolbar and pin Markup AI so the icon stays visible.

Option 2: Deploy to your organization (admins)

If you manage Chrome through the Google Admin console, you can force-install the extension for your users:

1

Open Apps & extensions

Go to Devices → Chrome → Apps & extensions → Users & browsers.

2

Select the organizational unit

Select the organizational unit to deploy to.

3

Add the extension by ID

Select + (Add) → Add Chrome app or extension by ID and enter the extension ID:

4

Set the installation policy

Set the installation policy to Force install (or Force install + pin to toolbar), then Save.

Deployed settings can take some time to reach managed browsers. For full details, see Google’s guide to installing apps and extensions.

Use it in a document

  1. Open any document in Google Docs.
  2. Open the side panel by selecting the Markup AI icon (from the toolbar or your pinned extensions) or the floating Markup AI button in the document.
  3. Select Log In and sign in with your account credentials, through Google or Microsoft authentication, or your organization’s single sign-on. Your sign‑in persists for future sessions.
  4. Run a check in Guided or Manual mode. Issues are scored and highlighted right in your document, and you can act on them in place.
  • Guided mode (recommended) — Choose the goal you are trying to accomplish and Markup AI selects the right agents for that goal, runs them, and walks you through the results so you can focus on what matters most. It’s the easiest way to get started, and you can switch to Manual mode any time.
  • Manual mode — Manual mode puts you in control. Pick the agents you want, select Check, and review the results yourself.

Review and act on issues

Each issue shows the agent that found it, a severity badge, the flagged text, and an explanation — and the text is highlighted in your document, color-coded by severity.

For each issue you can:

  • Apply Change — replace the flagged text with the suggested fix.
  • Add Suggestion — insert the fix as a Google Docs suggestion (tracked change) for someone to accept or reject.
  • Add Comment — add a Google Docs comment with the finding.
  • Mark as Resolved — available when an issue has no one-click fix; use it to clear an issue once you’ve handled it yourself.
  • Dismiss — set an issue aside without changing your document.

Results are saved per document, so you can close and reopen the panel without losing your place.

Your brand standards are all managed in the Markup AI console; the extension checks against whatever your organization has configured.

FAQ

  • Do I have to use Guided mode? No. Switch to Manual mode any time to choose your own agents and review everything yourself.
  • Will the extension change my document without asking? No. It only edits your document when you choose Apply Change or Add Suggestion. Use Google Docs’ undo (⌘/Ctrl+Z) to revert any change.
  • Do I need to update the extension? No. When a new version is released, Chrome updates the extension automatically — you’ll always be on the latest version.
  • The panel shows “Unable to connect to page” — what should I do? Reload the document and the extension will reconnect.

Known limitations

  • Works in Google Docs only — not Sheets or Slides. Support for more surfaces is on the way.
  • Runs in Chromium browsers (Chrome, Edge, Arc) — not Safari or Firefox.
  • Checks cover text content; images, charts, and other non-text elements aren’t analyzed.
